Weekly Links Roundup – Blog Post Length, Online Courses, Gutenberg Addons, Plugins

February 15, 2020 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

Here’s our latest selection of curated WordPress and web marketing links to help your business thrive.

One of my clients is now starting a blog with the goal of getting more traffic from search results. She asked me last week: “How long should my blog posts be?” The answer, like for so many things, is “it depends.” Looks like current trends are pointing to longer blog posts being better for getting more traffic (to the dismay of many!). Really long – like over 1700 words. Here is a post to back that up with research data, along with a number of other opinions and guidelines.

Ever thought about teaching others online? Here’s a thorough and informative post about creating your own online courses using LearnDash, a course plugin one of my clients uses and likes. There is a lot of upfront work involved in creating an online course, but the benefits in passive income can be worth it. Note that the linked post recommends a commercial theme that may or may not suit you or your course idea – you can use any theme with online courseware.

If you’ve made the switch to Gutenberg, you may be wanting more options than what comes in the new editor by default. Here’s a review of 10 of the best Gutenberg add-on plugins. These plugins give you new and different types of blocks to use in your page layouts. One of my current favorites is CoBlocks which includes about 30 layout blocks.

For new WordPress users – confused about the differences between themes and plugins? Here’s a great post explaining what plugins are and why you’d want to use them. One important thing to remember when choosing plugins (free or paid) is to look at the reviews and the compatibility. As a rule it’s better to avoid older plugins that haven’t been updated recently or tested with current or recent WordPress versions.

Weekly Links Roundup – WP Minder, Installing Plugins, Knowledge Bases, Gutenberg

January 24, 2020 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

Here’s our latest selection of curated WordPress and web marketing links to help your business thrive.

My website is down! What do I do? Here’s a post that answers that question. Or, if you were a WP Minder client, you’d just let us know (most likely we’d know before you do with our uptime monitoring) and we’d get you up and running quickly with no fuss on your part. But for you DIYers, learn 8 things to check when your WordPress site is down.

(Check out our WordPress Care Plans if you’d like to learn more about WP Minder and use coupon code WPMNP10 to get 10% off your monthly subscription.)

Let’s get really, really basic for a minute… Here’s a post on how to do one of the most important WordPress tasks: installing a plugin. Learn three ways to install a plugin! Bet you didn’t know there were three ways…

A knowledge base on your website can be a great way to provide a lot of information on your products or services in a highly-organized and easy-to-use tool. Here’s a review of four top knowledge base plugins for WordPress and information on how to get started creating your own.

You’ve probably used or at least encountered the Gutenburg editor in WordPress by now. Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay. And if you do use it, you’ve probably notice problems in either its capability limits or just the experience of using it. Here’s something that may help: a guide to 10 of the best plugins to extend Gutenburg. These plugins offer more blocks to give you more layout functionality. I’ve used CoBlocks for clients who like using Gutenberg.

Weekly Links Roundup – WP Guide, Collapsing Categories, Tags, Installing Plugins

December 27, 2019 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

Happy Holidays!

This week’s top WordPress and web marketing links.

Easy WP Guide, an online/downloadable handbook for using your WordPress site’s tools, has just come out with a fresh new updated version. Get it here.

Collapsing Categories is a useful plugin if you have a lot of blog categories and subcategories. It will expand and contract as needed and works great as a sidebar widget. You can see it in use here.

If you’re new to blogging in WordPress, you may not realize how handy using categories and tags can be. They can help with site navigation and general browsing.  They’re also useful for helping search engines crawl more of your website. Check out the 10 best practices of using tags and categories.

And if you’re brand new to WordPress, you may not be aware that you can add any of thousands of plugins to add new functionality to your site (that’s if you’re using self-hosted wordpress.org, not wordpress.com!). Learn about plugins and how to install them.

Weekly Links Roundup – Food Blogging, Breadcrumbs, SMTP

November 30, 2019 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s top WordPress and web marketing links.

Okay, sorry – I know I haven’t been blogging weekly in a few months. It was an intensely crazy summer and fall with a lot of unplanned travel related to family, a broken arm and hand, a vacation, a sinus infection and bronchitis. And no paddle boarding. But things are now beginning to settle into a new routine, and I hope to be blogging more regularly. Onward.

My husband recently started a food blog. Well, not exactly… it was more of a way to get about 150 printed recipes we use a lot out of a ragged folder and into digital format so we can find them easier. He used WP Recipe Maker as the recipe plugin – here’s a review of the best 15 WordPress recipe plugins in case you’re interested in trying a food blog yourself. These recipe plugins make it easy to add SEO-friendly recipes with options and features like printing and Pinterest rich pins built in.

And speaking of food blogs – if you include a recipe that’s been published elsewhere, how does that work? Is that a copyright violation, and if it is, how do you avoid that? This post discusses recipe attribution: “when in doubt, always give attribution.”

Let’s talk about breadcrumbs. No, not the ones from your favorite bread recipe… the helpful little string of text and links at the top of a page that tells you where in the website you are at any given moment. Did you know that those breadcrumbs are important for SEO? Not only are they good for human users; they also help Google and other search engines understand the structure of your site.

Finally… ever had problems getting notifications from your WordPress site, like submitted form entries or completed payment notifications? It’s one of the most common issues my clients report, but thankfully it’s also easy to fix. WordPress by default uses your host server’s PHP mail() function to send notifications, but quite commonly the server either isn’t using it or has problems with its setup. So what do you do? You don’t worry about the server at all. Instead, you use the SMTP (outgoing mail) settings from one of your existing email providers, like Gmail or a domain associated with your site. You could also use a 3rd-party service like SendGrid or Mailgun which will likely improve deliverability of site emails, important as your site and audience get larger. Here are instructions for setting up SMTP; my favorite free plugin for this is currently Post SMTP.

Weekly Links Roundup – Calendar Plugins, Tour Booking, Maintenance Mode, SMTP

October 18, 2019 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s top WordPress and web marketing links.

Calendar plugins are a big and sometimes confusing topic – there are a lot of them. Some are free and some paid. How do you choose the best one for your particular job? This review of top calendar plugins for 2019 might help. It’s a little different because it includes plugins for appointment and rental bookings – not just the typical event calendar.

And speaking of bookings… my client is a tour guide in Peru and was looking for a plugin to handle tour bookings. That was harder to find than I thought, but I came up with two options that look promising, and that we’re going to try.  Check out WP Travel or WP Travel Engine. You can also use WooCommerce for this purpose.

Sometimes you may need to ‘close’ your site to do some maintenance or handle an emergency. Here’s a post on how to put your site into ‘maintenance mode,’ with or without using a plugin.

Finally… Not getting the expected notification emails from your WordPress site? That’s so irritating, isn’t it? The reason is most likely that the host server is not set up for PHP mail(), or it’s set up incorrectly, or it’s being flagged as spam by the receiving server because PHP mail() is not industry-standard and can lack proper authentication. The fix is to use SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) to send those notifications instead. This post will show you how.

Weekly Links Roundup – Responsive Tables, Passwordless Logins, Effective Popups

September 6, 2019 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s top WordPress and web marketing links.

If you absolutely need to use a table in your website – like to present rows and columns of data – WordPress supports that task in sort of a frustrating way. There are some great plugins that will let you easily create and add tables to posts and pages that actually work well in mobile devices. Check out this review of the 10 best responsive table plugins.

If you’ve already laid out your table using the WordPress tool and then found it’s horrible in phones, have I got a treat for you! The Magic Liquidizer Responsive Table plugin will make your existing table code work nicely in small devices – like magic.

A new secure login method that just dropped today is Passwordless Login. This offering from iThemes says it’s more secure and usable because instead of requiring a password, it sends you a link to the email associated with your account. This is brand new and there’s not much info on it yet, but it sounds interesting.

Finally… if you use popups on your WordPress site, or are considering adding one, take a few minutes and learn more about the etiquette of popups. It can be very easy to overdo it and get in the way when trying to market to your site visitors. This post might help you do it more discreetly.
