Weekly Links Roundup – Grammar, Anti-spam Plugins, CCPA

March 14, 2020 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

Here’s our latest selection of curated WordPress and web marketing links to help your business thrive.

Not the best speller? Think doesn’t matter? Think again…Nothing hurts the credibility of your business like content full of spelling and grammar errors. It forces the reader to work harder to understand you. And put simply, it makes your business look slack. If your content is flawed, what does that say about the rest of your operations? Learn how to improve your content to build credibility. And if you’re not the best at spelling and grammar there are tools for that, like browser-based Grammarly which works in both Gutenberg and classic editors.

Here’s a roundup of some of the best anti-spam plugins for WordPress. I’m been a fan of Antispam Bee for awhile but lately am using the commercial plugin CleanTalk for our WP Minder Care Plan clients and it is fantastic. CleanTalk provides behind-the-scenes protection (no captcha!) and a dashboard that shows how it’s working – one of my client sites that was previously reporting a bad spam problem had almost 1,800 spam attacks blocked just this week.

By now you have likely heard about the CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) which dropped on January 1. Like the GDPR, the CCPA is designed to protect private data of users including knowing what person info is collected; what info is being sold; opting out of data collection and data selling. Here’s post about how CCPA may affect your WordPress business.

Weekly Links Roundup – WooCommerce Shipping, WordPress Comments, RSS Feeds

February 28, 2020 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

Here’s our latest selection of curated WordPress and web marketing links to help your business thrive.

I’m building a WooCommerce site for a client right now and needed a way to set up shipping by weight ranges. There are commercial plugins that do this, but I found a great free one that works fine for my client’s needs. WooCommerce Weight-Based Shipping lets you add a series of rules for free shipping, subtotals, shipping destinations, all based on order weight.

Do you allow comments on your WordPress blog? Comments can be great – they can help build and tie a community of site fans together. But they can also have a dark side. If your blog comments are overrun with spam or trolls and you just want it to stop, learn how to disable comments completely, or conditionally as you see fit. This post also covers how to delete existing comments, shorten the available commenting period, and more.

If you have a blog, are you sharing that blog so people can read it elsewhere? Like an RSS reader. Here’s an interesting post about RSS feeds and whether they are ‘giving away content for free.’ I agree with the author… you want people to read your blog, right? Encouraging people to subscribe to your RSS feed is a way to help more people see your writing. And that’s a good thing.

As a followup, here’s a review of the best RSS readers and news aggregator services. If you’ve never used one, try signing up and subscribing to some feeds.

Weekly Links Roundup – WP Minder, Installing Plugins, Knowledge Bases, Gutenberg

January 24, 2020 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

Here’s our latest selection of curated WordPress and web marketing links to help your business thrive.

My website is down! What do I do? Here’s a post that answers that question. Or, if you were a WP Minder client, you’d just let us know (most likely we’d know before you do with our uptime monitoring) and we’d get you up and running quickly with no fuss on your part. But for you DIYers, learn 8 things to check when your WordPress site is down.

(Check out our WordPress Care Plans if you’d like to learn more about WP Minder and use coupon code WPMNP10 to get 10% off your monthly subscription.)

Let’s get really, really basic for a minute… Here’s a post on how to do one of the most important WordPress tasks: installing a plugin. Learn three ways to install a plugin! Bet you didn’t know there were three ways…

A knowledge base on your website can be a great way to provide a lot of information on your products or services in a highly-organized and easy-to-use tool. Here’s a review of four top knowledge base plugins for WordPress and information on how to get started creating your own.

You’ve probably used or at least encountered the Gutenburg editor in WordPress by now. Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay. And if you do use it, you’ve probably notice problems in either its capability limits or just the experience of using it. Here’s something that may help: a guide to 10 of the best plugins to extend Gutenburg. These plugins offer more blocks to give you more layout functionality. I’ve used CoBlocks for clients who like using Gutenberg.

Weekly Links Roundup – Old Blog Posts, PDF Viewers, Landing Pages, Paypal Alternatives

January 11, 2019 by Debbie Campbell 1 Comment

This week’s top WordPress and web marketing links.

If you’re a regular blogger and have been doing it for some time, you’ve likely built up a large collection of old blog posts. Some may be useful “evergreen” content, but many may not longer be accurate or that useful. Should you do something about that? The answer is yes – check out this article on what to do with old blog posts. Start with an objective inventory. This process may be rather painful, but in the end you’ll be left with a blog that’s much more useful to your customers. Think of it this way: if you chose to commit to blogging in the first place, also commit to keeping that content at its best. As an added benefit, this cleanup will likely improve organic traffic to your site.

If you offer PDF documents on your site, did you know that you’re not stuck using the browser (which you have no control over) to display them? There are a few PDF viewers for WordPress that give you lots more control over display and keep your viewers on your site when they click to open the document. Both of the plugins reviewed in this article are commercial, but I’ve used the free PDF Embedder plugin on a few sites to good effect.

Well-thought-out landing pages can make the difference in getting a conversion (like a sale or a signup) or not. They simplify things down to one key idea – what it is you’re selling or asking people to sign up for. Here are 10 examples of successful landing pages to inspire you. And… here are some WordPress landing page plugins to help you construct your ideal landing page for any given purpose.

Finally… do you use Paypal in your ecommerce site? It has over 60% market share, so it’s a good bet. Love it, or hate it? If you’re in the latter category, this post is for you! Learn about the top 18 Paypal alternatives for ecommerce sites. I’m not sure if all of these are WooCommerce-compatible, since it’s quite likely you’re using WooCommerce if on WordPress. Stripe is my go-to payment plugin for WooCommerce, Gravity Forms, and Harvest. Compared to Paypal, their support is fantastic, and I find Stripe’s great dashboard makes it much easier for me to do my accounting tasks.

Weekly Links Roundup – Pot Store Plugin, Tag Clouds, HTTP Requests, Repurposing Content

November 3, 2017 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

Do you run a pot store? (Hey, I am in Colorado…). If you’ve been looking for an easy way to showcase your products online, there’s a new WooCommerce plugin for displaying marijuana-related details. Check out the plugin here.

Tag clouds are a handy visual tool for your WordPress sidebar, displaying keywords of various sizes and font weights based on how much they’re used in your site – see the one in the sidebar on Red Kite. Check out this review of 15 free tag cloud widget plugins.

On the more technical side, here’s a post about reducing HTTP/S requests in WordPress. Why would you want to know about that? The more file requests from your site to your host server (and back) the slower your site becomes. Reducing the number of requests can help speed up a slow-loading site.

Finally… if you have a lot of content already written/collected, you’re in a great position to benefit from it all over again. Ever thought about repurposing your existing content? Learn how to use that content to create something sellable, like an ebook.

Weekly Links Roundup – Yoast SEO, Caching, Printing, Ebooks

October 27, 2017 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

Yoast SEO can be an overwhelming plugin for newbies. If you’re a beginner, here’s a good, basic introduction to Yoast SEO.

Speed matters. If your site is slow to load, it’s almost certainly having an impact on your business whether you realize it or not. In WordPress, there’s a lot of talk about caching. What is it? How can it help speed up your site? Learn about caching (and other actions to help improve page loading times) in this article. Just FYI, my current favorite caching plugin (when one is needed) is WP Fastest Cache, it’s lightweight and very easy to set up.

You may for some reason want to make your WordPress site print-friendly. The easiest way for most site owners will be with a plugin like Print-O-Matic – learn more here.

Finally… if you’re in the mood for some self-torture, why not turn your already-published WordPress content into an ebook? I’m doing this myself, and it’s a big job for sure. Learn why and how you might want to undertake this adventure in publishing.
