Friday Link Wrapup: Beer, SEO, and Commercial Plugin Directory

September 5, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

Craft beer fan, or brewing your own? Here’s a plugin for you: Beer Directory. This plugin allows you to enter details about beers, create categories and control how listings are displayed.

There’s a new directory of commercial WordPress plugins in the works. While the plugin repository on wordpress.org has over 30,000 offerings, to date there’s been no similar resource for commercial plugins.  This new directory is just getting started but should become more useful as it grows.

Are you using an SEO plugin for your site or blog? If not, you should be. These 5 SEO plugins can really make a difference in your search engine rankings. WordPress SEO by Yoast is my weapon of choice.

Is the admin menu on your site out of control? This new plugin can help you tame it by allowing you to re-order the items in the admin menu in a way that works best for you. Check out Admin Menu Manager.

Friday Link Wrapup: User Switching, Blogging, Caching Plugins

July 17, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

A few weeks ago I found a great plugin called User Switching. If you run a membership site or forum or other website with lots of users, you’ll love this. It allows you to switch between user accounts in a single click, so you can see what your subscribers or authors or customers see without having to create test users.

How to write a killer blog post that people will actually share… a concise guide from Jacob Cass of Just Creative.

Speed up your WordPress usage by using some (or all) of these 12 built-in or plugin-supplied features.

Finally, here’s a report on the fastest WordPress caching plugins written by Philip Blomsterberg (the winners were WP Rocket – which I’ve not tried but will check out – WP Super Cache and WP Total Cache).

Friday Link Wrapup – Gravity Forms, Wishlist Member and Android

June 19, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

I’m a big fan of Gravity Forms and lately a lot of my clients have been using it to sell products. Find out how here – it’s really very easy to set up. When you only have a small number of products to sell, a full cart plugin doesn’t make sense. Gravity Forms will do the trick well.

If you’re using Wishlist Member, you know that its checkout process leaves a lot to be desired. Today I found a plugin, Gravity Member, that integrates Gravity Forms and Wishlist Member. My particular client is using it for user registration to view a demo product; the user fills out a registration form (a Gravity Form) and is instantly registered as a Wishlist Member (any level you choose) as well as a WordPress registered user (also, any role you choose). It works well and the developer offers speedy support.

And finally – using WordPress on an Android phone? There’s a new version with a different navigation menu – do you love or hate the hamburger?

Friday Link Wrapup: Online Courses, Job Boards, Repurposing Content

May 13, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

If you’re interested in selling courses through your WordPress site, Lifter LMS is a really interesting-looking new plugin. It includes:

  • Ability to build multiple courses
  • Enrollment and student management
  • Drip content
  • Paypal integration built in for payments, or you can buy a Stripe addon or integrate with third-party plugins like WooCommerce
  • Quizzes
  • Badges and certificates
  • Grading

You’ve likely seen a lot of scary news lately about WordPress security. Is WordPress safe? I agree with the author that the answer is yes, as long as you’re on a reasonable host and doing your part to keep your site updated, etc. Read the post to learn more.

If you’re interested in running a job board in your WordPress site here are eight plugins that may be just what you need.

And finally…. do you have a ton of blog posts? Looking to repurpose all that work? Consider turning them into an ebook! This is one way to turn blog posts into an ebook (the hard way). There are a few plugins out there for this purpose, but I’ve not tried them. If you do, please comment and let me know what worked for you.

Friday Link Wrapup: Best Plugins, BuddyPress, robots.txt

May 8, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

A roundup of the ‘best WordPress plugins’ ever. I agree with a few of them.

Here’s another take on that theme: the ‘must-have WordPress plugins for 2015.’

Does your site use BuddyPress? Here’s a new plugin that forces your users to upload a photo or some kind of avatar graphic. That’s pretty harsh and it may not sit well with all of your users, but it can be done.

For the technically-inclined, this is a good illustrated guide to the cropping methods you can use with WordPress.

More technical stuff: how to understand and use the robots.txt file with WordPress.
