Weekly Links Roundup – Broken Links, Missing Images, Stripe

March 9, 2018 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

Looking for an easy way to check for broken links on your WordPress site? There is a plugin for this (of course there is!) called Broken Links Checker, but this plugin is banned by some hosts because it puts a high load on the server. Fortunately there are other ways to check for broken links including using the free Google Search Console formerly Google Webmaster Tools) to check for crawl errors.

I ran into this problem on a client’s site just this week. If you ever open up the Media Library and some or all of your uploaded images are displaying blank thumbnails, this post on fixing Media Library blanks is for you.

Finally… If you are not using an ecommerce, membership or forms plugin that works with the Stripe payment gateway but would still like to use Stripe, you’re in luck! This post is all about using a free plugin to sell with Stripe. Your site will need an SSL certificate and use HTTPS to set this up.

Friday Link Wrapup – Bounce Rate, Free SSL Certificates, Crowdfunding

February 10, 2017 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

This week’s WordPress and web marketing links.

When clients get started using Google Analytics they’ll often notice they have a high bounce rate (the percentage of visitors who enter the site on a page and bounce right off the site without going to any other pages). What’s an acceptable bounce rate? And if yours is very high, how do you lower it? Here’s a podcast from Problogger that answers those questions.

Many of my clients are now taking my advice and making their site more secure by using HTTPS and an SSL certificate. What’s the difference between the types of certs? Are the free ones as good as the commercial ones? Learn about free SSL certificates – I highly recommend Let’s Encrypt if your host supports it; that’s what my clients on WP Engine use.

By the way – did you know that 50% of web traffic is now encrypted and using HTTPS? With the security and SEO benefits, it’s now a no-brainer.

Finally – if you’re thinking about starting your own crowdfunding site, like Kickstarter or Indiegogo, here’s a thorough review of the WP Crowdfunding plugin. It’s based on WooCommerce and supports Paypal and Stripe as well as a wallet system to keep track of contributions.
