Using WordPress SEO by Yoast? Update it now!

March 11, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

WordPress SEO by YoastThe very-popular WordPress SEO by Yoast – which I really like and use in almost all my client sites, and my own – was found to have a security vulnerability today that makes it more open to hackers.

This plugin is used by over 14 million WordPress sites, so this is a big deal. The plugin has already been updated to fix the security hole, so please update it on your site(s) now.

WP Minder client sites have already been updated, so you are taken care of.

For information on the problem and how it was found, read more here.

Using Fancybox for WordPress? Update or Replace It Now.

February 8, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

A security problem was found in the very popular Fancybox for WordPress on February 4 that led to many infected websites. The plugin was removed from the WordPress.org plugin repository temporarily until the plugin developer released a new version that patched the security issue on February 7.

If you’re using this plugin, make sure you update it ASAP.

Old Plugins are Security Risks

Unless you just installed it for the first time since the 7th, you shouldn’t be using this plugin at all.

Why not? Because until the patch on the 7th, it hadn’t been updated in over 2 years. Old plugins can cause lots of problems, including not being compatible with modern WordPress releases, conflicts with modern themes, and having code that is more prone to modern security exploits. In short, just because an old plugin is still working doesn’t mean it’s a safe choice for your website.

There are many Fancybox plugins available – I myself use Easy FancyBox which is kept current by its developers. Do yourself and your site a favor and make sure when you install a plugin that it is compatible with the current version of WordPress that you’re using. If you have any other really old plugins, take some time to find replacements.

Why Value Means More Than Price

February 5, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

I bought myself a bow last year and had been feeling guilty for leaving it under the bed for so long. A few weeks ago, I started going to a local indoor archery range to work on learning how to shoot well (or at least, hit the non-white part of the target more consistently – or the target in general instead of the wall…).

One thing that’s weird about archery if you’ve never done it – due to physics which I can’t explain, you’re going to be aiming below the target. I’m not sure how much this applies outside as I haven’t shot outside yet, but indoors on a 10-yard range, I’m aiming about 2 feet below the bullseye and a few inches to the left. At 20 yards, it’s more like 3 1/2 feet and I’m aiming at the floor.

It feels really odd, and unless you put a mark on the wall (or floor) to aim at, it’s very difficult to find that point. I noticed that each time I went to the range, I was spending most of my time trying to figure out where I should be aiming again instead of actually shooting for practice.

My new bow sight
My new bow sight

I have a book (Archery: Steps to Success) and this morning I was glancing through it as I ate breakfast. I read about bow sights and how they can help. I’m not a hunter, and all I want to do is target archery, so a bow sight is definitely something I’d use.

Before I started work I checked out bow sights on Amazon and saw that you can get some well-reviewed basic ones in the $20 range. Okay…

Choosing Value Over Price

So when I went to the archery shop today I spoke with the owner, who’s a super-nice and helpful guy, and he showed me his recommendation for a bow sight. It was about 50% higher than the price on Amazon, but I bought it with no questions because I knew what a great value I’d be getting. And for me, for many things, value is much more important than price.

If I’d purchased on Amazon, I’d have gotten a bow sight in 2 days for a great price and had to assemble it, attach it and find info on how to use it. How long might those extras have taken me? Maybe an hour or two.

Instead, I paid more, but I got expert advice in choosing a bow sight. I got it attached to my bow by someone who knew what they were doing, and I got professional one-on-one instruction in how to use it properly.

After having it put on, I walked right around the corner to the indoor range and spent the rest of my session not trying to figure out what I was doing, but shooting rounds of arrows and making little adjustments to my new toy. I got outstanding value for my money today, and this will make it even more likely that I’ll buy from the archery store next time. I’ll need a stabilizer bar soon…

WP Minder’s Goal is to Provide Great Value for Our Clients.

It’s not about just being ‘a backup service.’

WP Minder is about providing value by being a resource for our clients, not just a set-it-and-forget-it automated service. This is especially true for our clients who are business owners who have no desire to become web developers.

We work to curtail problems before they happen, but when an issue does come up, we can help.

  • Don’t know the best way to add some kind of new functionality to your website?
  • Have an old plugin that’s no longer working and you need to replace it?
  • Want to move to a new host, but are not sure how to do that (or don’t want to risk it yourself)?
  • Been hacked and are not sure how to clean up?

We’re happy to answer those kinds of questions and help with those types of tasks; it’s part of the complete package you get with WP Minder. If you’re not a client and need this kind of partner for your WordPress-based business, give one of our plans a try today.

Plugin Review – Easy Twitter Feed Widget

January 5, 2015 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

Easy Twitter Feed Widget tweetsI do a lot of social media posting as the owner of WP Minder, and there’s especially a lot of Twitter activity. This weekend I decided to post my Twitter feed on wpminder.com.

If you’ve done this yourself, you know what a pain it can be. You have to jump through a number of hoops including creating an application with the Twitter API (application programming interface). Your eyes may be glazing over already and I don’t blame you; it is confusing.

Here’s what’s involved in creating a Twitter application – this is a great step-by-step guide, by the way, but if you can avoid doing this, why wouldn’t you?

So I found a nice Twitter feed plugin that doesn’t require you to work with the Twitter API at all. It’s called Easy Twitter Feed Widget.

What this plugin does is add some customization capability – colors, links, sizes – to the basic feed widget provided by Twitter, which you can get by logging into your Twitter account and going to https://twitter.com/settings/widgets/new.

To use the plugin, you’ll get your Twitter widget ID from that page by creating a new widget and then copying the Widget ID from the URL – it will look something like “419173025219799552.” This is what you’ll paste in your new Easy Twitter Feed widget in WordPress.

It takes about 5 minutes to get this up and running. If you’d like to display tweets on your own site or blog, give this plugin a try.

Plugin review – Restrict Widgets

December 29, 2014 by Debbie Campbell Leave a Comment

I’ve been using Conditional Widgets for more than a year to control where any given WordPress widget appears (by default, every widget shows up everywhere, which is often not what you want to happen).

On a recent client project, though, Conditional Widgets wouldn’t work, because this particular project had a number of custom post types.

A custom post type is like a special type of blog post – for instance if you have a site about movies, you might have a custom post type for Movies and another custom post type for Actors, that are totally separate from the rest of your blog. It keeps the different types of blog posts from getting displayed together in the same place.

Anyway, Conditional Widgets has a flaw – it doesn’t support custom post types. So my client couldn’t prevent a widget from appearing on certain parts of her site (not without some coding, which my client shouldn’t have to learn).

Happily I found Restrict Widgets. It’s current with WordPress 4.1, has over 29,000 downloads and an average rating of 4.8 out of 5. If you’re looking for a new widget, always look at what others are saying about it! And make sure it works reliably with your version of WordPress.
